The Election Commission is acting like a puppet in the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president Amit Shah, former minister and Congress leader B K Chandrashekar said on Saturday.
“The Election Commission, which is an apolitical entity, has blatantly abdicated its responsibility by defending Modi and Shah,” Chandrashekar charged. “We need someone like T N Seshan (former chief election commissioner) to ensure free and fair elections.”
He pointed out that Modi and Shah had been let off while BSP chief Mayawati, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu got a rap from the Election Commission for violating the poll code. “The EC should’ve banned the PM from campaigning,” he said. “But it was a mute spectator even as Modi disgracefully and shamefully asked first-time voters to dedicate their votes for Pulwama martyrs,” he said.
