Congress' Aftab Ahmed managed to retain the Muslim-dominated Nuh constituency in the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections, defeating Indian National Lok Dal's (INLD) Tahir Hussain. The results were announced on Tuesday and talking to the reporters, Ahmed said "people voted against BJP's divisive politics."

"I thank people of my constituency, party workers and top leadership of the party. It has been proved again that BJP's 10-year regime, the divisive politics they did, people have voted for Congress and shown faith in the party. We will work to fulfil the promises we have made," he said.

Ahmed secured the victory with a huge margin of 46,963 votes. The winning margin in 2019 elections was just 4,000 votes. BJP's Sanjay Singh was at the third spot with 15902 votes.

Ahmed's victory holds special significance in the backdrop of the violence that rocked the region last year after a VHP procession was attacked by a mob, leading to the death of six people, including two home guards and a cleric.

During his campaign, Aftab had proposed a law against lynching in the name of cow protection and a judicial inquiry into the 2023 communal violence.

Polling for the 90-member Haryana Assembly was held in a single-phase on October 5.

A total of 1,031 candidates, including 464 Independents and 101 women, are in the fray for Haryana's 90 constituencies.

Counting of votes polled in the October 5 assembly elections in Haryana began at 8 am on Tuesday.
