New Delhi: Congress General Secretary and Haryana in-charge Deepak Babaria has offered to resign from his post taking responsibility for the party’s debacle in the state where it was expecting to return to power after a gap of ten years.

Sources said Babaria offered to quit soon after the Haryana results were out, but no decision has been taken so far.

Babaria said, “My health is not well and also it is my moral responsibility (to offer to resign) in the wake of the results. I had told the High Command that if you deem fit, you can replace me. After the Lok Sabha polls, I had offered to resign as in-charge of Delhi, but no decision has been taken on that. Similarly, no decision has been taken for Haryana but it is my responsibility to offer.”

Babaria has faced allegations of being close to the camp led by former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda and ignoring senior leaders like Kumari Selja, Randeep Surjewala and Ajay Yadav, who are considered bete noire of former Chief Minister Hooda.

The Hooda detractors had accused him of not taking all sections along and succumbed to the former Chief Minister. Sources said he was also accused of not providing a correct picture of the situation in Haryana to the central leadership.

Hooda and Babaria had faced flak for candidate selection and not being able to rein in rebels, who are said to have impacted the winning prospects of Congress candidates in over a dozen seats. There were also allegations that Hooda had supported some rebels against candidates who were his critics in the party.

A day after the results, Margaret Alva, who was party’s General Secretary and Haryana in-charge between 2004 to 2009, said highlighting that she was in-charge when the party won the state twice, she said, “winning required staying neutral and unifying the party – striking a balance between individual aspiration and the good of the party.”
