Dibrugarh: Jailed 'Waris Punjab de' activist Amritpal Singh's parents arrived here on Saturday to meet him after he was elected from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency in the just concluded parliamentary polls.
His father Tarsem Singh and mother, Balwinder Kaur, were received at the airport by Amritpal's wife Kirandeep Kaur who has been camping here since June 5 and went to the Dibrugarh Central Jail to meet their son who has been housed here since March 2023.
"We are very happy that our son has won the elections. We have come to meet him so that he will also feel happy that people love him and elected him by such a huge margin," his father said.
The senior Singh said that they will ask him about his reaction to winning the polls and ''what will be his message for the people of his constituency''.
His mother was seen distributing sweets to the jail employees.
Kaur said that she has brought a new set of clothes and shoes for her son which he will ''need for his oath taking as a MP''.
Amritpal's wife was accompanied by advocate and former Punjab MP Rajdeo Singh Khalsa who said that all necessary legal steps are being taken to ensure his release.
The Sikh community voted for him because they have seen leadership quality in him, Khalsa claimed.
Amritpal won the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat by 1,97,120 votes as an independent candidate by defeating Congress's Kulbir Singh Zira and AAP's Laljit Singh Bhullar came third.
The jailed activist polled 4,04,430 while Zira got 2,07,310 and Bhullar 1,94,836 votes.
Amritpal had launched Amrit Sanchar in Punjab for a drug-free state and was doing a good job in Punjab, Khalsa claimed.
"The AAP government in Punjab has conspired against him and put him behind the bars on false charges for their political benefit," Khalsa alleged.
Amritpal's arrest was ''unconstitutional and unlawful', the lawyer claimed.
He also claimed that Amritpal's victory from Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency has proved that people support him.
Ten members of the pro-Khalistani outfit, including Amritpal and one of his uncles, are lodged in the jail since March 19 last year after they were arrested under the National Security Act from different parts of Punjab following a crackdown on the outfit.
