The representation of women in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls continues to remain dismally low, as only about 12 per cent of the candidates in the fray in the fifth phase are female, according to an analysis by poll rights body ADR.
The ADR analysis also showed that nearly 23 per cent have declared criminal cases against themselves and about 18 per cent have serious criminal cases pending.
The world's most populous democracy continues exercising its right to elect its government as we head into the Phase 5 of the Lok Sabha elections 2024.
Having started on April 19 and scheduled to run till June 1, Phase 5 of the 7 phases of voting will be held on May 20 for 49 constituencies across six states and two union territories. The results will be declared on June 4.
These include six seats of Mumbai --Mumbai South, Mumbai South-Central, Mumbai North-Central, Mumbai North-East, Mumbai North-West and Mumbai North, four seats of Mumbai metropolitan region - Thane, Kalyan, Bhiwandi and Palghar and three onion-belt seats of Nashik, Dindori (ST) and Dhule.
Congress has fielded Rahul Gandhi from the Raebareli seat.

Around 8.86 per cent of over 95.11 lakh voters in five Lok Sabha constituencies in Bihar have exercised their franchise till 9 am on Monday, officials said.
The polling began at 7 am in Muzaffarpur, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Saran and Hajipur Lok Sabha constituency and will go on till 6 pm, a senior official at the CEO office said.
A voter turnout of 6.33 per cent was recorded till 9 am on Monday in 13 Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra where voting was underway in the fifth and final phase of general elections in the state, as per poll authorities.
Among the 13 constituencies, Bhiwandi recorded 4.86 per cent polling, Dhule 6.92 per cent, Dindori 6.40 per cent, Kalyan 5.39 per cent, Mumbai North 6.19 per cent, Mumbai North Central 6.01 per cent, Mumbai North East 6.83 per cent, Mumbai North West 6.87 per cent, Mumbai South 5.34 per cent, Mumbai South Central 7.79 per cent, Nashik 6.45 per cent, Palghar 7.95 per cent and Thane 5.67 per cent, as per official data.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asserted that the BJP will emerge as the single largest party in the south, as he remained unwaveringly confident that his NDA alliance will cross 400 seats in Lok Sabha when election results come out on June 4.
Nearly 11.68 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 9 am in three Lok Sabha constituencies in Jharkhand on Monday, elections officials said here.
Voting started at 7 am in Chatra, Hazaribag and Koderma Lok Sabha seats, marking the second phase of elections in the eastern state, and will continue till 5 pm.
Chatra seat saw about 11.43 per cent voter turnout till 9 am while the same was at 12.04 per cent and 11.56 per cent in Hazaribag and Koderma seats respectively.

Scattered incidents of violence marred the fifth phase of Lok Sabha polls in seven parliamentary constituencies in West Bengal on Monday, as TMC and BJP workers clashed in various parts of Barrackpore, Bongaon, and Arambagh seats.
Although the poll panel has claimed that the polling has been peaceful so far, it said it has received 1,036 complaints until 11 am from different political parties alleging EVM malfunctioning and agents being stopped from entering booths.
Clashes broke out between supporters of TMC and BJP in Khanakul area of Arambagh constituency as both parties clashed over stopping polling agents from entering the booths.

Over 37.80 per cent of voters have exercised their franchise in Muzaffarpur, 35.01 per cent in Sitamarhi, 33.67 per cent in Saran, 33.57 per cent in Madhubani, and 33.10 in Hajipur till 1 pm.

Asked about the 'black flag' protest against Kangana Ranaut in Kaza, Congress MP candidate Vikramaditya Singh said, "As of now, I don't have much knowledge about it. When I visited Kaza, I heard that her (Kangana Ranaut's) improper statement about His Holiness The Dalai Lama left an impact on the people of the area. Kangana Ranaut should give an unconditional apology to The Dalai Lama."

Addressing a public meeting in Jhargram, West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "The people of Bengal are in danger from TMC, the identity of Bengal is also in danger. Today the whole country is worried about Bengal. Violence occurs every day in Bengal, BJP workers are killed..."
He added, "These people (TMC) are calling infiltrators and settling them. The population of people from Bengal is decreasing in the border areas. Modi will be on a two-day visit to Bihar starting today, May 20, where he will attend two separate programs in Patna. He is scheduled to visit the residence of the late senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi at Rajendra Nagar to pay tribute to his departed soul. Sources said that Modi will also visit the BJP state headquarters in Patna and hold a meeting with party functionaries.
During his two-day itinerary in Bihar, the Prime Minister will stay at Raj Bhavan in Patna tonight. Tomorrow, he will address two public meetings in Motihari in Purvi Champaran and Goriyakothi in the Siwan parliamentary constituency in support of NDA candidates. In view of the Prime Minister’s visit to Bihar, security has been beefed up in Patna, Motihari and Siwan.

There was a clash between Congress and BJP workers during the ongoing voting in Little Angel School located in Sion area of Mumbai. BJP workers claimed that they were giving voting slips to voters 100 meters away from the polling centre, on which Congress officials accused BJP people were interfering in the voting process by going near the polling centre. After which Congress and BJP workers came face to face and BJP claimed that they even threatened to kill two people.
