The prominent candidates whose fate was decided today include BJP leaders and Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Piyush Goyal and Smriti Irani, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and KL Sharma, Omar Abdullah of the National Conference, and Chirag Paswan of LJP (Ram Vilas). Only 12% of candidates in fray in phase 5 are women, says ADR

The representation of women in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls continues to remain dismally low, as only about 12 per cent of the candidates in the fray in the fifth phase are female, according to an analysis by poll rights body ADR.

The ADR analysis also showed that nearly 23 per cent have declared criminal cases against themselves and about 18 per cent have serious criminal cases pending.

Over 8% polling recorded in five seats in Bihar till 9 am

Around 8.86 per cent of over 95.11 lakh voters in five Lok Sabha constituencies in Bihar have exercised their franchise till 9 am on Monday, officials said.

The polling began at 7 am in Muzaffarpur, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Saran and Hajipur Lok Sabha constituency and will go on till 6 pm, a senior official at the CEO office said.

11.68% voter turnout in Jharkhand till 9 am

Nearly 11.68 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 9 am in three Lok Sabha constituencies in Jharkhand on Monday, elections officials said here.

Voting started at 7 am in Chatra, Hazaribag and Koderma Lok Sabha seats, marking the second phase of elections in the eastern state, and will continue till 5 pm.

Chatra seat saw about 11.43 per cent voter turnout till 9 am while the same was at 12.04 per cent and 11.56 per cent in Hazaribag and Koderma seats respectively.

Scattered incidents of violence in fifth phase of Lok Sabha polls in Bengal

 Scattered incidents of violence marred the fifth phase of Lok Sabha polls in seven parliamentary constituencies in West Bengal on Monday, as TMC and BJP workers clashed in various parts of Barrackpore, Bongaon, and Arambagh seats.

Although the poll panel has claimed that the polling has been peaceful so far, it said it has received 1,036 complaints until 11 am from different political parties alleging EVM malfunctioning and agents being stopped from entering booths.

Clashes broke out between supporters of TMC and BJP in Khanakul area of Arambagh constituency as both parties clashed over stopping polling agents from entering the booths.

Over 34% polling recorded in five LS seats in Bihar till 1 pm

Around 34.62 per cent of over 95.11 lakh voters in five Lok Sabha constituencies in Bihar have exercised their franchise till 1 pm on Monday, officials said.

The polling began at 7 am in Muzaffarpur, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Saran and Hajipur Lok Sabha constituencies and will continue till 6 pm, a senior official at the CEO's office said.

Over 95 lakh voters in these five seats will decide the electoral fate of 80 candidates at 9,436 polling stations.

Over 37.80 per cent of voters have exercised their franchise in Muzaffarpur, 35.01 per cent in Sitamarhi, 33.67 per cent in Saran, 33.57 per cent in Madhubani, and 33.10 in Hajipur till 1 pm.

PM Modi arrives in Patna for two-day Bihar visit 

Modi will be on a two-day visit to Bihar starting today, May 20, where he will attend two separate programs in Patna. He is scheduled to visit the residence of the late senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi at Rajendra Nagar to pay tribute to his departed soul. Sources said that Modi will also visit the BJP state headquarters in Patna and hold a meeting with party functionaries.

Clash between Congress and BJP workers in Sion

There was a clash between Congress and BJP workers during the ongoing voting in Little Angel School located in Sion area of Mumbai. BJP workers claimed that they were giving voting slips to voters 100 meters away from the polling centre, on which Congress officials accused BJP people were interfering in the voting process by going near the polling centre. After which Congress and BJP workers came face to face and BJP claimed that they even threatened to kill two people. Based on the complaint of a BJP worker, Sion police registered a case against two unknown people under section 506(2) of IPC and started further investigation: Mumbai Police. (ANI)
