Srinagar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured all seven Scheduled Caste (SC) seats in Jammu for the second consecutive assembly elections. This clean sweep underscores the party's stronghold in the region and its continued support among SC voters.

However, the saffron party faced a setback in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories, losing all six ST seats in the region.

The outcome highlights the challenges the party encountered despite the 10per cent reservation implemented for the Pahari community, which did not translate into electoral gains.

The BJP government at the Centre had, for the first time, reserved nine seats for STs in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. It was also Narendra Modi government which gave 10per cent reservation to Paharis in separate ST category. Paharis have large population in Rajouri and Poonch districts where BJP bagged just one out of eight seats.

The BJP also bagged five out of six newly created seats in Jammu division after delimitation. Riding on SC seats and newly created constituencies, the saffron party’s best performance in J&K Assembly election history yielded it 29 seats, all in Jammu region. The party failed to open its account in Kashmir valley.

The BJP also won all five seats having prominent shrines in Jammu, including Katra (Shri Mata Vaishno Devi), Reasi (Shiv Khori), Paddar-Nagseni (Machail Mata), Billawar (Sukrala Mata) and Jasrota (Jasrota Wali Mata).
