Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Monday officially invited National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah to take oath as Chief Minister of the Union Territory on October 16.
The development follows the Centre's decision to revoke President's Rule in Jammu and Kashmir after six years and comes in the wake of the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
On Monday, Abdullah shared a letter from Sinha on social media, confirming the invitation to the oath ceremony. The L-G’s letter referenced a communication received from Farooq Abdullah, president of the NC, stating that Omar had been unanimously elected as the Leader of the Legislature Party.
Sinha also noted support for Abdullah from various political figures, including Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra, CPM Secretary G N Malik, AAP national secretary Pankaj Kumar Gupta, and several independent MLAs-elect Payare Lal Sharma, Satish Sharma, Mohammad Akram, Rameshwar Singh and Muzafar Iqbal Khan.
“As separately settled, I shall administer Oath of Office and Secrecy to you, and to those recommended by you for induction as members of your Council of Ministers, at SKICC, Srinagar on 16th October, 2024 at 11.30 am,” the L-G letter said.
Earlier, on October 11, Abdullah formally staked his claim to form the government during a meeting with the L-G, presenting letters of support from various parties and independents. He had been unanimously elected as the leader of the NC legislature party on October 10, setting the stage for his second term as Chief Minister, having previously served from 2009 to 2015 as part of a coalition government with the Congress.
The recent Assembly elections, held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, marked the first electoral process in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370. The NC-Congress alliance emerged victorious in the 90-member Assembly, with the NC securing 42 seats, the Congress winning six, and the BJP claiming 29 seats.
