Following Engineer Rashid's victory in the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency back in the Lok Sabha elections in July 2024, his party, the Awami Ittehad Party(AIP), was expected to build upon it and gain a spot at the high table of Jammu and Kashmir's politics, but failed to make the climb.
Out of the 34 AIP candidates in fray, only one of them won, while another gave their opposition a run for their money.
Engineer Rashid's brother Khusheed Ahmad Sheikh won in Langate by a margin of 1,602 votes, gaining 25,984 votes. He finished ahead of NC's Irfan Sultan Pandithpuri.
Sayyar Ahmad Reshi was another who performed well, in comparison to others who contested from the party. He finished second to CPI(M)'s Mohamad Yusuf Tarigami by a margin of 7,838 votes. Reshi gained 25,796 votes.
Rashid, who earlier riding high on a sympathy wave, defeated National Conference vice president and former chief minister Omar Abdullah in the Lok Sabha election from the Baramulla seat, is facing charges in a terror funding case and had been lodged in Tihar jail from 2019 till just last month. His bail was recently extended til October 12.
