With the assembly elections around the corner, the political pot in Jharkhand is brewing. While all eyes are on the state to see if Hemant Soren will be able to retain his CM chair or not, there are some constituencies that are going to witness a battle fiercer than the others.

One such constituency is Tamar in Jharkhand’s Ranchi where incumbent JMM MLA Vikas Munda is all set to lock horns with Gopal Krishna Patar of the JD(U).

It is noteworthy that Gopal Krishna Patar, also known as Raja Peter is the main accused in the murder of Vikas’s father and former JD(U) MLA Ramesh Munda, in 2008.

Peter came out of jail last year after spending six years in imprisonment. The NIA had reportedly claimed that Peter was the mastermind of the murder of Vikas Munda's father.

As a son and his father's murder accused lock horns in Jharkhand, the anti-incumbency sentiment in the states could be instrumental in Peter's victory.

“The JMM’s promises are purely for election purposes. I have registered for the BJP’s Didi Gogo Yojana, which has promised Rs 2,100 after the polls. I believe in the BJP and it will win,” The Indian Express quoted a voter as saying who also added that Peter was always available for them.

"Nobody remembers that he is a key accused in a murder case," a voter said.

Infact, right after the murder of Ramesh, Peter won the 2009 elections where he defeated former CM Shibu Soren, a JMM patriarch.

Elections to the 81-member assembly in the state will take place in two phases on November 13 and 20, and votes will be counted on November 23. The voting for Tamar will be conducted in the first phase.

Assembly Elections 2024 | The Maharashtra Assembly polls will take place against the backdrop of a fractured political landscape in the western state where the Shiv Sena and NCP will be going up against the Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar factions, even as the BJP and Congress try to make their mark. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, the JMM faces a new challenge after Hemant Soren's recent arrest and Champai, a longstanding party member, joining the BJP. The Haryana election resulted in a shock loss for Congress, which was looking to galvanize on the Lok Sabha poll performance, while J&K also saw the grand old party eventually stepping away from the cabinet, with Omar Abdullah's JKNC forming government. It remains to be seen if the upcoming polls help BJP cement its position further or provide a fillip to I.N.D.I.A.
