Born in 1977, the 47-year-old serves as the cabinet minister of roads & buildings and construction & water resources in Jharkhand under his brother, Hemant Soren, the current Chief Minister of the state.

Soren first contested in the 2016 Rajya Sabha elections for JMM, but ailed to get to the Upper House.

In 2020, he contested the bypolls for the Dumka, the constituency vacated by his elder brother Hemant Soren after he won this and Barahit seats in the December 2019 assembly elections and decided to retain the latter.

Basant beat BJP's Louis Marandi by 6,842 votes. He was appointed a cabinet minister in February 2024.

For the Lok Sabha polls 2024, with his brother Hemant in jail, Basant took the lead for JMM in the state, which won three of the five seats it contested.

Basant is set to contest from the Dumka constituency once again for the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly elections.

Assembly Elections 2024 | The Maharashtra Assembly polls will take place against the backdrop of a fractured political landscape in the western state where the Shiv Sena and NCP will be going up against the Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar factions, even as the BJP and Congress try to make their mark. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, the JMM faces a new challenge after Hemant Soren's recent arrest and Champai, a longstanding party member, joining the BJP. The Haryana election resulted in a shock loss for Congress, which was looking to galvanize on the Lok Sabha poll performance, while J&K also saw the grand old party eventually stepping away from the cabinet, with Omar Abdullah's JKNC forming government. It remains to be seen if the upcoming polls help BJP cement its position further or provide a fillip to I.N.D.I.A.
