Lucknow: Amid the ongoing tussle over seat sharing and within days of stating that ‘sacrifice’ had no place in politics, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday called for ‘unity’ to defeat the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance in the forthcoming assembly polls in Maharashtra.

‘’A joint and organised political strategy in the forthcoming assembly polls in Maharashtra will bring an end to the mahadukhi (painful) period of Mahayuti rule in the state,’’ Akhilesh said in a message to the residents of Maharashtra and the media persons, on his ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) handle.

‘’Committed to bring about a positive change and defeat the enemies of Maharashtra-yours Akhilesh,’’, the message said.

He said that the awareness of the electorate and the media persons would result in ‘ridding’ Maharashtra of the ‘divisive’ and ‘’negative politics’’ of BJP.

He accused the BJP of ruining the economy of Maharashtra gradually through a conspiracy. ‘’BJP stands exposed before the people of Maharashtra....BJP has also damaged social harmony and brotherhood in the state...BJP wants Maharashtra to become so weak economically that the financial leadership of Maharashtra can be given to some others,’’ he said.

Akhilesh said that the BJP did not even spare the statues of the leading personalities and ‘sheltered’ those accused of crimes against girls.

He hoped that the media persons in Maharashtra would also perform their role as expected from the fourth pillar and would not allow any BJP sponsored misleading publicity and also condemn the same.

Assembly polls are slated in Maharashtra on November 20.

The SP leader’s remarks came amid a tussle within the MVA over seat sharing with the SP, which had demanded over a dozen seats and threatened to put up its candidates if its demand was not met. Akhilesh had also said recently that there was no place for sacrifice in politics.

Assembly Elections 2024 | The Maharashtra Assembly polls will take place against the backdrop of a fractured political landscape in the western state where the Shiv Sena and NCP will be going up against the Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar factions, even as the BJP and Congress try to make their mark. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, the JMM faces a new challenge after Hemant Soren's recent arrest and Champai, a longstanding party member, joining the BJP. The Haryana election resulted in a shock loss for Congress, which was looking to galvanize on the Lok Sabha poll performance, while J&K also saw the grand old party eventually stepping away from the cabinet, with Omar Abdullah's JKNC forming government. It remains to be seen if the upcoming polls help BJP cement its position further or provide a fillip to I.N.D.I.A.
