Palghar: Amid the BJP-led Majha Yuti's (NDA) sweep at the Maharashtra assembly elections, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) managed to retain its tally of one with sitting MLA Vinod Nikole winning the Dahanu seat. However, veteran leaders of the party Jiva Pandu Gavit and Narasayya Adam failed to win at the polls.
“Congratulations and Red Salute to Comrade Vinod Nikole for retaining the Dahanu (ST) seat in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections,” the CPI (M) posted on X.
Nikole won the Dahanu (ST) seat for the second time as he defeated BJP’s Vinod Medha.
Dahanu is located in the Palghar district - situated around 120 kms away from Mumbai.
Nikole is a 49-year-old Adivasi leader from a poor peasant family. He is a member of the CPI(M) Maharashtra State Committee and has been a party whole-timer for the last 15 years since 2005. He is the State Secretary and Thane-Palghar District Secretary of the CITU and was a member of the DYFI state committee.
“Amid the BJP-NDA cyclone seen in the Maharashtra assembly election results, winning this seat against all odds is a remarkable achievement,” said CPI(M) Politburo member Dr Ashok Dhawale, who is the President of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS).
This is the 10th time out of the last 11 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections since 1978 that the CPI(M) has won this seat (Jawhar-ST before delimitation in 2009), and that too even after fielding 5 different candidates across the years - all of whom won.
In the Kalwan (ST) seat in Nashik district, seven-time former MLA Jiva Pandu Gavit, popularly known as J P Gavit lost the polls against Ajit Pawar-led NCP’s Nitin Pawar, son of former MLA A T Pawar.
In Solapur City Central, three-time MLA Narasayya Adam, popularly known as Adam Master came up short against Devendra Kothe of the BJP and Chetan Narote of the Congress.
Speaking about the Dahanu victory, Dr Dhawale said, “The credit for this massive victory against the unprecedented money power and communal conspiracies of the RSS-BJP goes to the people of Dahanu and Talasari tehsils; to the thousands of dedicated activists of the CPI(M) and the Maha Vikas Aghadi; the constant struggles led by the CPI(M) and the mass fronts like AIKS, CITU, AIDWA, DYFI and SFI.”
“Besides that, comrade Nikole has also done exemplary work over the last five years,” said Dr Dhawale.
"This is a huge victory for the people's struggles and the constructive development work done by MLA Vinod Nikole and thousands of CPI(M) workers in the last five years,” the CPI(M) said.
It may be mentioned, CPI (M) Politburo Member Brinda Karat had also come and addressed several rallies for Nikole.
