Shiv Sena is a political party which was founded by Bal Thackeray on June 19, 1966, and was later succeeded by Uddhav Thackeray, with its base in Maharashtra.

2014 Assembly Elections

In 2014 assembly elections, BJP turned out to be the largest party by winning 122 seats out of the 288 and the Sena, which had 63 seats and was the second winner in line, agreed to join the BJP later.

When Uddhav Thackeray later took over the leadership, Shiv Sena formed an alliance with the Congress and NCP in 2019.

2019 Assembly Elections

The NDA alliance (BJP and Shiv Sena) in 2019 assembly elections together won 161 seats marking a consecutive victory.

Political crisis

In June 2022, a senior Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde, along with a majority of MLAs joined hands with the BJP, calling for a trust vote.

As Shinde formed a new coalition with the BJP, Uddhav Thackeray resigned as the chief minister of Maharashtra.

Shinde, who was sworn in as the new chief minister on June 30, 2022, also filed a petition with the ECI about his claim on the name 'Shiv Sena' and its symbol. At present, Shiv Sena refers to the Eknath Shinde led faction while Uddhav Thackeray leads Shiv Sena (UBT).

Assembly Elections 2024 | The Maharashtra Assembly polls will take place against the backdrop of a fractured political landscape in the western state where the Shiv Sena and NCP will be going up against the Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar factions, even as the BJP and Congress try to make their mark. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, the JMM faces a new challenge after Hemant Soren's recent arrest and Champai, a longstanding party member, joining the BJP. The Haryana election resulted in a shock loss for Congress, which was looking to galvanize on the Lok Sabha poll performance, while J&K also saw the grand old party eventually stepping away from the cabinet, with Omar Abdullah's JKNC forming government. It remains to be seen if the upcoming polls help BJP cement its position further or provide a fillip to I.N.D.I.A.
