Mumbai: The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi has been left rattled and flabbergasted as they were swept away by the NDA and even failed to cross half-century in the 288-member Maharashtra Legislative Assembly with its top leaders describing the results as not something which is not people’s verdict.

At the time of publishing this article, the MVA total of wins and leading seats was less than 50.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT)'s tally is 20 followed by Congress 10 and NCP (SP) of Sharad Pawar 10.

“It was not just a wave, but a tsunami… This was beyond all expectations… Some say it’s the victory of the EVMs… maybe. But if it's also acceptable to the masses then we have nothing to add,” said Thackeray.

“We are reaching a situation of one nation, one election, one party…we are now moving in that direction, but whether it is acceptable to the people or not remains a question,” said Thackeray.

“There are many doubts… Why the people have voted so heavily for MahaYuti? What was their sudden love for them? Large number of women, farmers and youth attended our rallies for their concerns compared with the emptiness in the Maha Yuti’s public meetings,” he said.

Congress general secretary Ramesh Chennithala said that they were surprised and shocked. “Time has not gone…once the results come with details, we will analyse those,” he said, adding that veteran leaders like Balasaheb Thorat, Prithviraj Chavan have lost.

“How can that happen…Thorat is an eight-time MLA and has worked a lot,” he said, expressing surprise. Sharad Pawar and his daughter Supriya Sule have not commented on the verdict so far.

However, NCP (SP) chief spokesperson Mahesh Tapase said: “This is not the people's mandate. Failure in governance cannot translate to electorate success. We need deeper introspection.”

Assembly Elections 2024 | The Maharashtra Assembly polls will take place against the backdrop of a fractured political landscape in the western state where the Shiv Sena and NCP will be going up against the Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar factions, even as the BJP and Congress try to make their mark. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, the JMM faces a new challenge after Hemant Soren's recent arrest and Champai, a longstanding party member, joining the BJP. It remains to be seen if these polls help the BJP cement its position further or provide a fillip to I.N.D.I.A.
