Mumbai: The ‘Sangli-pattern’ of rebellion which was witnessed during the Lok Sabha polls in Sangli is seen again in the Vidhan Sabha polls in the city that is located on the banks of Krishna river.

The Lok Sabha elections of 2024 saw an intense battle between three Patils -- a veteran, a wrestler, and a rebel were in the fray.

Sangli was once a bastion of the Congress, however, riding on the Narendra Modi wave, the BJP has won the last two elections.

The three main players were two-time sitting BJP MP Sanjaykaka Patil, wrestler Chandrahar Patil, who has been fielded by the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Vishal Patil, a Congress rebel and Independent candidate.

However, Vishal Patil won the polls and later extended support to the grand old party.

Vishal Patil is the grandson of legendary Congressman and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Vasantdada Patil, the son of five-time MP Prakashbapu Patil and brother of former MP and central minister Pratik Patil.

In the Vidhan Sabha polls, in Sangli, Jayashri Patil has filed papers as an Independent. She is contesting against two-time sitting BJP MLA Sudhir Gadgil and Prithviraj Patil, the Sangli district Congress President.

Jayashri Patil is the wife of the late Madan Patil, the son of Vishwanathrao Patil, and the grandson of the late Vasantdada Patil.

Incidentally, sitting MP Vishal Patil has fully backed his sister-in-law Jayashri Patil.

Last week, Jayashri Patil and Pratik Patil met Maratha reservation campaigner Manoj Jarange-Patil and sought his support.

She has also requested the Election Commission to issue her the electoral symbol of an "envelope", which her brother-in-law Vishal Patil used during the Lok Sabha elections and won.

Assembly Elections 2024 | The Maharashtra Assembly polls will take place against the backdrop of a fractured political landscape in the western state where the Shiv Sena and NCP will be going up against the Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar factions, even as the BJP and Congress try to make their mark. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, the JMM faces a new challenge after Hemant Soren's recent arrest and Champai, a longstanding party member, joining the BJP. The Haryana election resulted in a shock loss for Congress, which was looking to galvanize on the Lok Sabha poll performance, while J&K also saw the grand old party eventually stepping away from the cabinet, with Omar Abdullah's JKNC forming government. It remains to be seen if the upcoming polls help BJP cement its position further or provide a fillip to I.N.D.I.A.
