Congress' in-charge for Maharashtra, Ramesh Chennithala, alleged on Saturday that two MLAs have been offered crores of rupees to join the Ajit Pawar-led NCP. He also asked "why the chief minister who is in-charge of the home department silent?"

"Reports are coming out that crores of rupees have been offered to two MLAs to join NCP (Ajit Pawar faction). It comes under anti-defection law. Why CM who is in charge of the home department is silent? CM has the responsibility to tell the people what has happened... Offering and accepting bribes is a criminal activity," he told the reporters.

Meanwhile, Congress has released the second list of 23 candidates for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections. The party retained sitting MLA Kailash Gorantyal from Jalna and fielded party leader Sunil Kedar's wife Anuja from the Saoner seat.

Elections for the 288 member assembly are due on November 20 while results will be declared on November 23.

Assembly Elections 2024 | The Maharashtra Assembly polls will take place against the backdrop of a fractured political landscape in the western state where the Shiv Sena and NCP will be going up against the Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar factions, even as the BJP and Congress try to make their mark. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, the JMM faces a new challenge after Hemant Soren's recent arrest and Champai, a longstanding party member, joining the BJP. The Haryana election resulted in a shock loss for Congress, which was looking to galvanize on the Lok Sabha poll performance, while J&K also saw the grand old party eventually stepping away from the cabinet, with Omar Abdullah's JKNC forming government. It remains to be seen if the upcoming polls help BJP cement its position further or provide a fillip to I.N.D.I.A.
