Assembly bypolls: Why is there no vote counting in Sikkim today?When the bypolls were announced, elections were slated to be held in 48 Assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats. However, counting is taking place for 46 seats today.

Counting of votes began at 8 am for bypolls to 46 Assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats.

When the bypolls were announced, elections were slated to be held in 48 Assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats. However, counting is only on for 46 of the 48 assembly seats.

The two seats, where counting is not taking place today, are in Sikkim.

The Soreng-Chakhung and Namchi-Singhithang seats in Sikkim went up for grabs, but the state's ruling party, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) won both after the seats remained uncontested.

The two seats were supposed to go for polls on November 13, and the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), led by former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, had also fielded candidates for the same.

However, the SDF withdrew its candidates, paving way for an SKM victory.

Aditya Golay Tamang, the son of Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, won the Soreng-Chakhung seat uncontested.

Meanwhile, Satish Chandra Rai of the SKM won the Namchi-Singithang seat after his SDF rival Daniel Rai withdrew.
