Days before Telangana goes to polls, the Congress has played its trump card— 'Sonia Amma.'

The party has released a video, in which UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi makes an appeal to the Telangana electorate to vote for the Congress-led grand alliance in the state.

Sonia recalled her role in the formation of Telangana and sought to remind the voters that they had been “betrayed” by “those in power in Hyderabad”.

“Four and a half years ago a separate state of Telangana was created. I too played a role in making that happen. But, you have been betrayed by those in power in Hyderabad,” the former Congress president said, who is popular as 'Sonia Amma' across the state.

We made a promise to form the state of Telangana & we fulfilled that with the help of the people, that is the Congress way - to deliver on our assurances. Today we promise you a government that will stand with every section of society & will represent the people of Telangana. pic.twitter.com/HbNgz0HB0q

To campaign for the December 7 Assembly polls, Sonia paid her maiden visit to Telangana on November 23.

There too, she played on the 'mother' analogy as she canvassed for the 'Praja Kutami' (people's alliance) comprising the Congress, the TDP, the TJS and the CPI.

“I feel happy, as happy as a mother can be when she meets her children after years,” she had said addressing a rally at Medchal on November 23.

She had campaigned in the 2014 elections in the then united Andhra Pradesh, but had not visited the newly carved out Telangana after it elected rival Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) to power in the Assembly elections.

In the video message released late on Tuesday night, Sonia termed the 'Praja Kutami' as the voice of the people of Telangana.

“It is your alliance. An alliance for each and every section of Telangana's society,” she said.

“Now is the time, wherever you are in Telangana, to fulfill your hopes and expectations, your desires and aspirations. I appeal to you personally to vote for the Praja Kutami,” she said.

“Your vote is a vote not only for the future of Telangana, but for your future as well,” the UPA chairperson said.
