In a setback to BJP in poll-bound Telangana, former MLA Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy had quit the party. The ex-Munugode MLA had announced his resignation from BJP on Wednesday morning. Shortly after this, he said he is rejoining Congress.
“The political equations in Telangana have changed. People of the state want Centre to take action against the corrupt KCR government. This demand has not been fulfilled. As BJP could not grow as an alternative to the ruling BRS, Congress occupied that space. The state of Telangana which was realised by the struggle of all the people got lost due to the anarchic rule of the KCR government for ten years, “ he said.
Reddy added that he had decided to join the Congress according to the wishes of the people of Telangana who are looking for a change.
“I am resigning from BJP under compelling circumstances. I thank the BJP leadership for giving me the opportunity to fight against the dictatorial KCR government in the Munugode bypoll. I am forever indebted to Union Home Minister Amit Shah who encouraged us to fight against BRS government,” said Rajagopal Reddy.
Incidentally, Komatireddy is the younger brother of Bhongir Congress MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy.
It is learnt that anticipating a Congress sweep in the November 30 Assembly poll, Reddy had decided for a ‘homecoming’. Both Komatireddy brothers started their political careers with Congress.
Rajagopal Reddy had won Munugode in 2018 on a Congress ticket. Later in 2022, he quit Congress and resigned as MLA only to join BJP.
He contested Munugode bypoll on a BJP ticket. However, he lost to BRS candidate K Prabhakar Reddy in a high-stakes poll battle with a margin of 10,309 votes. Reddy was not seen in any BJP activities for quite sometime.
“I had switched to BJP from Congress in the past. It's the vice versa today. However, the goal is the same -- to end the corrupt and anarchic rule of the KCR family,” he added.
