Actor Ranveer Singh's latest movie 83, which hit the screens on December 24, collected nearly Rs 15 crore on day 1 much to the delight of fans. It witnessed limited growth on Saturday, collecting a mediocre Rs 16.5 crore despite the Christmas holiday. Its total collection stands at nearly Rs 30 crore

83 fared well in the metros but its performance was not up to the mark in mass centres. It also faced competition from Allu Arjun's Pushpa in the Telugu states and the Hindi belt.

The film has, either way, fared better than the 'massy' dramas Satyameva Jayate 2 and Antim, which hit the screens last month. The John Abraham-starrer raked in nearly Rs 2 crore on its second day while Salman Khan's gangster drama collected approximately Rs 6 crore on day 2. It has, however, not been able to match Sooryavanshi as the Rohit Shetty-helmed biggie netted Rs 23.85 crore on its second day. This, however, is not too surprising as the Akshay Kumar-starrer was a part of the filmmaker's 'Cop Universe' that includes Singham and Simmba.

83, directed by Kabir Khan, features Ranveer as Kapil Dev and highlights how 'Paaji' led his men to victory in the World Cup even though they were not perceived to be serious contenders. The film has strong patriotic undertones and a compelling narrative. It features Deepika Padukone as Romi Bhatia, Kapil's wife, and reunites her with her real-life husband. The cast includes Tamil star Jiiva, Pankaj Tripathi, Wamiqa Gabbi, Saqib Saleem, Punjabi actor Ammy Virk and Sahil Khattar of 200 fame.

83 has received positive reviews with most critics praising the well-executed cricket matches and the sincere performances. The word of mouth is positive, which may work in its favour in the coming days. Its performance will, however, be affected by the fresh Covid-19 curbs that have been put in place in markets such as Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh to check the spread of the Omicron variant.
