"Plans are in development to create a download service that would offer a combination of free and paid-for films," said Kishore Lulla, the chief executive of Eros International.
Lulla said he expected to charge a monthly fee to premium subscribers who wish to access thousands of Bollywood films in a number of dialects and dubbed in numerous languages.
The dubbed market is worth up to 2 million pounds a year to the company in each market, with large fan bases in the UK, Germany, Poland, Indonesia, China and Malaysia. The popularity of Eros's YouTube, which has 25 to 30 million views a day, prompted the idea for the download site.
Lulla said that content will be created especially for the service, with agreements in place for some films to be released on the Hulu-style service before appearing at the cinema or on television.
The service will be available on mobile and IPTV and possibly a Bollywood channel on YouView when the internet-enabled TV service is set to launch in the UK next year.
Last week, Eros, which distributed 39 films in the first half of this year, recorded a one-third jump in first-half profit, as the popularity of Bollywood films continued to increase. Pre-tax profit for the period went up to 17.4 million pounds, as sales jumped by a fifth to 42 million pounds.
The company has a number of projects in the pipeline, including 'No Problem' starring Anil Kapoor.
