The Hollywood biggie Godzilla vs Kong, which hit the screens on March 24, has set the Indian box office on fire despite the Covid-19 situation. The film collected Rs 22.44 (net) in the first four days and emerged as the choice of the audience.
Adam Wingard's magnum opus collected Rs 6.40 crore on the opening day even though it was a midweek release. In doing so, it fared better than the Bollywood films Mumbai Saga (Rs 2.82 crore) and Roohi (Rs 3.06 crore) that hit the screens under the 'new normal'.
Godzilla vs Kong subsequently witnessed a drop on the second and third days, collecting 5.40 crore and Rs 4.22 crore. It bounced back on Saturday (March 27), raking in Rs 6.42 crore.
The film has received largely positive reviews with most critics praising the simple yet effective storyline and top-notch production values. The word of mouth is positive, which should help it rake in the moolah on Sunday.
The film is likely to end the extended weekend with a collection of around Rs 30 crore. It is unlikely to face competition from the Bollywood film Saina as the Parineeti Chopra-starrer has proved to be a non-starter. The film is also expected to have a smooth run in Kerala as Mammootty's Malayalam movie One has not opened as well as his last release The Priest.
The consensus is that Godzilla vs Kong has exceeded expectations at the box office due to the immense popularity of the titular characters. The grand scale and the spectacular fight sequences make it a big screen spectacle, which has prompted the audience to visit the theatres even under the current circumstances.
Godzilla vs Kong, the fourth instalment of Legendary's MonsterVerse, is a direct sequel to Godzilla: The King of the Monsters and Kong: Skill Island. It has an impressive cast that includes Swedish star Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown and Iron Man 3 actor Rebecca Hall.
