The 27-year-old pop star, who had a history of drug and alcohol addiction, died of a suspected overdose at her apartment in London yesterday.
"She was one of the greatest artists this country has ever produced," Daily Mail quoted music legend Elton John as saying.
Other celebs took to Twitter to mourn her death.
"It's just beyond sad. There's nothing else to say. She was such a lost soul. May she rest in peace," singer Lily Allen tweeted.
Joining her was singer Rihanna, who posted, "Dear God have mercy! I am sick about this right now! I am genuinely heartbroken about this."
Rapper Usher tweeted, "I'm so sad to hear the horrible news of Amy Winehouse's death. I'm so happy I knew you Amy. Rest well. Gone too soon. We'll miss you!"
"I just found out. I feel pain. I feel anger. Rest beautiful girl rest. You are free! RIP Amy," said Spanish pop star Ricky Martin.
R&B star Nicki Minaj tweeted, "Please tell me Amy Winehouse didn't die. Is this some sick joke?"
"So sad. Unfortunately the world lost an incredibly talented woman to such a powerful disease: addiction. RIP," said Disney star Demi Lovato.
'Fantastic Four' star Jessica Alba tweeted, "So sad about Amy Winehouse - she was so talented. Really tragic". "Truly sad news about Amy Winehouse. My heart goes out to her family. May her troubled soul find peace," wrote actress Demi Moore.
"I just heard the news that Amy Winehouse passed away. What a true talent. I pray she's in a better place and at peace," reality TV star Kim Kardashian tweeted.
"So sad to hear about Amy Winehouse. What a talent, way to young to die. Addiction is such a deadly disease. She's now in a better place," Paris Hilton wrote.
Closer home, filmmakers Madhur Bhandarkar, Shekhar Kapur, actor-director Farhan Akhtar and actress Sonam Kapoor were among those who mourned Winehouse's death.
"Shocked to hear the sad demise of AMY WINEHOUSE, May God bless the departed soul, RIP !!" tweeted Bhandarkar.
Shekhar Kapur said, "RIP #Amy Winehouse passes away. She really did say #No (sic)."
Farhan said, "I burn my candle at both ends, it will not last the night, but ah my foes and oh my friends, it gives a lovely light. RIP Amy Winehouse".
"Amy Winehouse for all the demons you faced I hope you at last have found your peace. I loved your big voice and your music. love & peace," tweeted Sonam.
Actor Rahul Bose said, "Amy Winehouse. what a tragic waste. there is no glamour in a premature death. only sadness and regret", while actress Celina Jaitley tweeted, "I cannot believe Amy Winehouse is no more... I just cannot believe it ..so much talent... gone forever".
