Need You Now is the second studio album from this group after their debut self-titled album. Essentially country, there are also traces of R&B, pop, and rock in their music. Popular country music themes such as clash between contemporary life and the old ways and regret is dressed up with rock riffs and uptempo beats.
In the title track, Need You Now, the group’s Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott harmonise on a melancholy tune about a bittersweet breakup and drunken yearning. In American Honey, Kelley and Scott’s rich blend comes across deeply. In Love This Pain, Kelley shows off his vocal slyness and rough tenor with the accompaniment of lively guitar strings and pounding drums. The neat arrangement of Ready to Love Again, a song about starting all over again, highlights the trio’s musical growth.
