A 50-year-old woman was brutally murdered after being allegedly gangraped by a priest, his disciple and another person in Uttar Pradesh's Badaun district, about 300 kilometres from here.
Police said that the woman had gone to pay obeisance at a nearby temple on Sunday night when she was gangraped.
According to the police sources here, there were injuries on her private parts, chest, arms and legs. The post-mortem report of the deceased revealed the extent of brutality.
The accused fled after dumping the victim's body in front of her house in the Ughaiti locality late in the night. The victim, who was bleeding profusely when she was brought home, was already dead by then, said sources.
Although the police were informed at night itself by the family members of the victim, the cops reached there on Monday evening. Her body was sent for postmortem examination.
Initially, the cops claimed that she had died after falling into a well but the postmortem report, which was made available on Tuesday, refuted their statement. The cremation of the body took place on Tuesday night in the presence of the cops.
Two persons were arrested in this connection. The priest, however, continued to be at large, the police said.
The station in-charge of Ughaiti police station was suspended on charges of laxity.
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra attacked the UP government over the incident and accused it of having failed to ensure the safety of the women in the state.
The incident comes within months of the gangrape and murder case of a teen in UP's Hathras district.
