In a tragic incident, a 6-year-old girl from Kharar in Punjab was raped by a person who turned out to be HIV positive, the police said.
According to the police, the minor girl was playing with her friends in the village. The accused, identified as Joseph, who is an unskilled worker and is known to the family of the victim, picked her up and walked away. Girl's mother, who went looking for her daughter, found the accused sexually abusing the kid.
Joseph was caught and beat up by the locals and then handed over to the police.
According to the family of the victim girl, the accused was taken to the Chandigarh government hospital in Sector 16 some weeks ago after he got unwell. Tests at the hospital indicated he was HIV positive. He was then referred to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh where his disease was confirmed with HIV infection, said sources.
Doctors say they would be initiating all necessary medical treatment procedures to help the victim in wake of the looming threat of transmission of the virus.
The life of the minor victim girl now remains threatened by transmission of the deadly disease.
