The Union government has set up special academies at seven centrally-funded technical institutes to improve the quality of engineering faculty.

The ministry of electronics and information technology has set up these academies at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, IIT-Guwahati, IIT-Kanpur, National Institute of Technology Patna, NIT-Warangal, MNIT-Jaipur and Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Jabalpur.

The eventual objective of the move is to increase the employability of engineering graduates in the electronics and information technology sector.

Under the faculty development and mentoring programmes, the newly set up electronics and ICT (information communication technology) academies will provide specialised training on basic and advanced level topics for engineering streams as well as domain-based training on the use of ICT tools and techniques for non-engineering streams. Besides, it will offer training and consultancy services for industry as well as continuing education programme for students and working professionals.

The academies will also support incubation of innovative projects and entrepreneurial activities as well as help technical institutes update curriculum to produce industry-ready engineering graduates.

The ministry has earmarked Rs 35 crore for running these seven academies, aiming to train at least 22,000 faculty in four years.

The seven academies are set to start with short-term training programmes for the faculty from this month.
