Jadhav, along with some senior Air India officials, had gone to Britain's capital to meet officials of an insurance company in the wake of Kerala High Court's directive to pay Rs 75 lakh each to the families of the victims of last year's Mangalore air crash.

According to sources, he also had other issues to discuss related to the airline's financial health with the bankers and lenders but had to return to Delhi by the same plane in which he landed in London on Tuesday night.

Jadhav reached here on Wednesday morning. The sources said the Air India chief's visit was cut short as the government wanted to fast track the finalisation of the airline's turnaround plan.

Also, the government wanted him here as it was to face some uncomfortable questions in Parliament related to non-payment of salaries to the employees and the deteriorating financial health of the 'Maharaja'.

Left and Trinamool leaders met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and raised the issue of non-payment of salaries to Air India employees. The Prime Minister then called Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi who confirmed that two months' wage and four months PLI were defaulted. Ravi said that within three to four days, two months' salary and one month PLI would be paid to the employees.

The national carrier is facing a massive cumulative loss and debt burden totalling around Rs 67,000 crore and is awaiting infusion of Rs 1,200 crore equity from the government.
