Amartya Sen, leading economist and winner of Nobel economics prize, is “totally fine” his daughter Nandana Sen said on Tuesday, following wide circulation of fake news claiming that the economist had passed away.
“I am just shocked as well as disappointed by the state of Indian journalism. How could major newspapers and platforms fail to do their basic fact checking before manufacturing such sensationalistic headlines? Honestly, it’s laughable!,” (Nandana) Sen stated, responding to a DH query over a messaging app.
The fake news about the death of the philosopher-economist who will turn 90 this November began spreading after it was posted on a fake account of Claudia Goldin, the Nobel prize winner in economics this year.
“Thanks for your concern but it's fake news: Baba is totally fine. We just spent a wonderful week together with family in Cambridge – his hug as strong as always last night when we left for the train station!” Nandana shared in her message, also posted by her on X.
“He is teaching two courses a week at Harvard, working on his book on gender – as busy as ever!” she added.
