High drama was witnessed in a local court here when a sub-inspector of police, peeved by the questions posed during cross-examination, whipped out his loaded service revolver and pointed it at the lawyer.

Dharmendrasinh Sarvaiya, the police officer, was suspended from service following the incident which took place in the court of additional chief judicial magistrate G J Thoriya here.

Advocate Nayan Kanasara was cross-examining Sarvaiya in a case where the latter is accused of trying to force another lawyer to vacate his shop in Hawai chowk here two years ago.

Sarvaiya said the lawyer was getting on his nerves with the questions, and pulled out his service revolver.

The judge asked him to put the revolver back in holster, warning of action. However, Sarvaiya kept the revolver pointed at the lawyer for some time.

The magistrate reported the matter to the district judge R M Sarin and the superintendent of police Pradeep Sejul.

Sejul told PTI that Sarvaiya, posted at Udyognagar police station on probation, had been suspended. He would face a departmental inquiry, another officer said.

President of the Jamnagar Bar Association Bharat Suva announced a two-day strike demanding stern action against the police official. Suva also demanded contempt of court proceedings against Sarvaiya.
