Police said a case has been registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the medical examination of the girl was conducted for necessary legal action.

As Dhing town was shut and protest intensified on Friday morning, police arrested two accused and launched a search for another person.

Condemning the incident, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday morning asked director general of police, GP Singh to rush to Dhing as hundreds of protesters took to the streets demanding immediate arrest and action against the rapists.

"The horrific incident at Dhing, involving a minor, is a crime against humanity and has struck our collective conscience. We will not spare anyone and bring the perpetrators to justice," CM Sarma said.

Talking to reporters, Sarma tried to use the incident to once again target the Bengali speaking Muslims as the accused were reportedly Muslims. But the Opposition Congress and others said that criminals should not be identified by their religion and action must be initiated as per the law.
