According to the reports, the two, identified as Sarfarz and Faheem, were admitted to the community health centre at Nanpara, where the condition of Sarfarz was stated to be 'critical'.

Sources said that five people, all accused in the Bahraich violence, were planning to escape to Nepal, which was not very far from Nanpara, when they were intercepted by an STF team.

Sources said that the accused persons opened fire at the cops, who retaliated and Sarfaraz and Faheem sustained gunshot injuries during the firing. Three others were also arrested during the encounter.

The family members of Sarfaraz, however, claimed that the cops had picked him and three other members from their residence on Wednesday morning.

A youth, identified as Ram Gopal Mishra, had been shot dead allegedly by members of a particular community, during the violence that broke out during a Durga idol immersion procession on Sunday night. Around a dozen people suffered injuries in the violence and were admitted to the hospital.

As many as 50 people were arrested in connection with the violence. Two police personnel, including the station in-charge of Hardi police station, were suspended on charges of laxity.

Members of the majority community had taken to the streets after the killing and torched vehicles, houses and shops in Bahraich prompting the police to use force and suspend internet services.
