Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday made key organisational changes in Assam after Punjab and Uttarkahand, naming Bhupen Bora as PCC chief and appointing three Working Presidents on the pattern followed in recent rejig in other states.
Bhupen Bora, stated close to Rahul Gandhi has been appointed Assam Congress chief two months after Ripun Bora had resigned from the post taking responsibility for the party's debacle in the recent Assembly polls.
Bhupen Bora was opposed to alliance with Badaruddin Ajmal's AIUDF and was one among the four leaders, who had written to Sonia Gandhi last year against this alliance. Congress lost the election massively and the alliance was stated one of the reasons for it later.
The three Working Presidents are Rana Goswami, Kamalakhya Dey Purkyastha and Jakir Hussain Sikdar. Both Purkayastha and Sikdar are MLAs. Sikdar and Purkyastha are from the Bengali community, which was learnt to have been miffed with Congress in Assam because of their opposition to CAA. Rana Goswami hailing upper Assam belongs to the Brahmin community and is believed to be close to Priyanka Gandhi.
After handing the new responsibilities, the party has relieved Ripun Bora and Rana Goswami of their current posts of AICC secretaries and thanked the outgoing state Ripun Bora for his contributions.
In two more appointments, Loken Singh was appointed interim president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect till a full-time chief was named while the party also appointed Arya Kumar Jnanendra as chief organiser for the Odisha Pradesh Congress Seva Dal.
