In a first-of-its-kind incident, a bridegroom in Bihar’s Saran district preferred to give a lesson on road safety and distributed helmets as gift to the guests.

A graduate of Jai Prakash University, the bride from Chapra, Sweety, always educated people on the hazards of driving without seat-belt or helmet. Some followed her advice. Many ignored her sermons. The young girl, in her early 20s, then decided to make it a memorable event during her wedding at Ekma block in Saran.

So when scores of baraatis (the groom side) reached the marriage venue, Sweety deemed it fit to spread awareness about road safety soon after the ‘jaimal’ (exchange of garlands).

“I distributed around two dozens helmets among the baraatis with a request to everyone to abide by the traffic rules, use seat-belt (for four-wheelers) and helmets (for two-wheelers) and follow driving norms be it on the highway or the mohalla (colony) roads,” said the bride who took everyone by surprise through her unique initiative last week.

While the guests blessed the newly-wed couple profusely, the bride’s effort to spread road safety awareness became the talk of the town.

“Though I have been doing my bit, I could not save one of my close relatives Kanchan Devi, my mami (maternal aunt), who died in a road accident a fortnight back,” she lamented. It was on that day that she resolved to gift helmets on the day of her wedding.
