"We are doing a broadbased audit. I cannot give a number as to how many contracts we are probing. We will submit the report by January-end," Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai told reporters here.
Meanwhile, the Organising Committee today clarified its position in full-page advertisements in several newspapers on its role in the conduct of games.
The two-week long Commonwealth Games have reportedly cost the nation an estimated Rs 70,000 crore. The CAG is probing the contracts given by various agencies for construction of infrastructural facilities, equipment and conduct of Games.
The CWG Organising Committee in its advertisement, which was issued a day after its Chairman Suresh Kalmadi quit the post of Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) secretary, has said that the body was responsible only for conduct of the games and not for construction of infrastructure facilities.
The CAG is vetting the expenditures incurred in different Commonwealth Games related projects. The Games were held here between October 3-14.
The audit process by CAG teams began in the middle of August. However, it was halted between September 24- October 14 in view of the Games. Rai had earlier said that the CAG would submit its report on the CWG only to the Parliament.
A host of other agencies like the Income Tax department, Enforcement Directorate and Central Vigilance Commission are investigating the Games expenditures.
Besides, on October 15, the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has also appointed a committee headed by former CAG VK Shunglu to look into the various aspects of the organisation of the common wealth games. The committee is expected to submit its report in 90 days.
