At the same time, condoms will be distributed free in the apartments of the Games Village, hotels and other places where the tourists will stay.
“The National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) is considering distributing free condoms to players and other accompanying members of the teams, aiming to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS during the Games,” NACO director general K Chandramouli said here on Monday. Athletes and officials can get condoms after inserting Rs 5 coin in the vending machines.
Close to 200 vending machines will be installed, which would dispense roughly one lakh condoms during the two weeks of the Games. “We are in talks with the state (Delhi) government and other civic authorities to rope in manpower to put up the condom vending machines,” Chandramouli said. He also announced the NACO’s expansion of its Condom Social Marketing Programme.
