New Delhi: Congress on Wednesday congratulated Donald Trump as he sealed his victory in the United State presidential polls but warned that the future of the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change is “extremely shaky” and a withdrawal from the treaty by Washington as it did earlier will be “disastrous”.

India and the United States share a robust comprehensive global strategic partnership, underpinned by long-standing shared democratic values, aligned interests, and extensive people-to-people connections, he said.

“We look forward to working closely with the United States for global peace and prosperity,” Kharge added.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi posted on X, "congratulations on your victory, Donald Trump! Wishing you success in your second term as US President. All the best to Kamala Harris in her future endeavours."

Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh said Trump has staged an “astonishing comeback” and the “who and how it happened” would be analysed in great detail over the next few weeks, as will the question of what this comeback means for the US and the rest of the world.

“But what is certain is that the future of the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change which America had rejoined under President Biden is now extremely shaky. If the US were to withdraw again it would be disastrous,” Ramesh warned.

The Paris Agreement, which is a legally binding international treaty adopted in 2015 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change, aims to limit the rise in global temperatures to well below 2 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with a preference to limit the increase to 1.5 degree Celsius.
