In a first, a director in Gujarat is all set to release a movie on the subject of homosexuality and gays, hitherto unimaginable in the state.
The film, “Meghdhanushya–The colours of our life”, will be released in theatres across Gujarat on Friday. Unlike other movies where there are reflections of a gay character, in Meghdhanushya, the protagonist is a homosexual.
The movie is divided into three parts. The first part speaks about the lead character experiencing hormonal changes, but is unaware of changes in his sexual inclination.
The second part is on adulthood, wherein he realises and accepts that he is a homosexual.
And the third part of the film is wherein a gay couple, despite changes in the societal system, continue to face issues of acceptance and existence in a homosexual society.“Gujarat continues to show disapproval for homosexuals even today, so much so that discussions on homosexuality continue to be a taboo,” said gay prince Manvendrasinh Gohil, who has done a narration in the movie.
However, Gohil admits that awareness has increased over the years. He said, had this movie been released five-years ago, the response would have been negative, but now it will generate a discussion on homosexuality which is a positive sign. The change in societal mindset was better reflected when the Censor Board gave the movie an “A” certification.
Many admit that decriminalisation of section 377 has also helped in discussing issues related to homosexuality.
Apart from Gohil, organisations including Lakshya Trust of Vadodara, Humsafar Trust of Mumbai, Swalambi Trust of Ahmedabad and several other trusts working for homosexuals have extended their support to the venture.
