In his last stint as the Mumbai Police Commissioner, senior IPS officer Param Bir Singh handled several important cases like the TRP scam and Anvay Naik suicide case, the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput – and always remained in news.
But in his previous stints too, the 1988-batch IPS officer, had made headlines – he had handled several important assignments – Superintendent of Police in Chandrapur and Bhandara, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) in Mumbai, Additional Commissioner of Police in North-West Region in Mumbai, Additional Commissioner of Police in Anti-Terrorism Squad, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order).
During the 26/11 terror attacks, Singh was posted as Additional Commissioner of Police, and countered the terrorists in Oberoi-Trident. However, the then Police chief Hasan Gafoor made some comments on certain officers including Singh. Singh's boss, Hemant Karkare, the then ATS chief, laid down his life during the terror attacks.
Karkare and Singh were also involved in the investigations of the Malegaon blasts case in which Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit are accused. Last year, she had accused Singh of torturing her in custody.
In August, 2018, in a press conference, he read out letters seized by Pune police in the Elgar Parishad-Koregaon Bhima case, in which there were revelations of a conspiracy to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and overthrow the elected government. In fact, the Bombay High Court, rapped him for this.
As Thane Police chief, his team arrested Iqbal Kaskar, the brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. He also busted a Rs 2,000 crore drug scandal in Thane with international repercussions and links to foreign cartels linked to Vijaygiri Anadgiri Goswami aka Vicky Goswami alias Vicky and his wife Mamta Kulkarni.
