The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is working on a proposal to make FASTags mandatory in all four-wheelers from January 1.
Though since 2017, FASTag had been made mandatory for all new four-wheeled vehicles, now the government will make the same for old four-wheelers sold before 1st December 2017.
The Ministry will soon make the amendment to the provisions of Central Motor Vehicles Rules to implement this, said an official.
To promote digital transaction in national highways toll plazas and reduce the congestion, the government is pushing for the installation of FASTag on vehicles.
Once FASTag is made mandatory for all existing four-wheelers, the government authorities can impose fine if any vehicle does not have it, said an official in the Ministry of Transport.
Last month the government decided that only those vehicles carry valid functional FASTag will get discount for users who make return journey within 24 hours and all other local exemptions.
