New Delhi: The BJP on Tuesday appointed Mohan Lal Badoli as the president of the party’s Haryana unit, replacing Chief Minister Nayab Saini. The appointment comes as the state is set to head for Assembly elections later this year in October.

Badoli, who has long been associated with the RSS, was appointed by party president J P Nadda.

He currently represents the Rai assembly seat, which he won in 2019 after defeating Congress candidate Jai Dahiya with a margin of over 2,600 votes. However, he recently lost the Lok Sabha polls from the Sonipat constituency to Congress’s Satpal Brahamchari.

The BJP is up for a contest in the state with the Congress winning five of the state’s 10 Lok sabha seats in this term. In 2019, the saffron party had swept all seats in addition to winning the Assembly elections.

In run up to the elections, the party had announced senior leaders Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and former Tripura CM Biplab Deb as election in-charges for the state last month. Additionally, last week, the BJP announced prabharis, or in-charges, for 24 states, naming former Rajasthan president Satish Poonia as the state’s in-charge and Surendra Singh Nagar as the co-incharge.
