What is confidence motion?

A Confidence Motion is a motion of support proposed by a government in a parliament or other Assembly of elected representatives to give the members a chance to register their confidence in a government. The motion is passed or rejected by means of a parliamentary vote.

Saini (54), who is Kurukshetra MP and state BJP chief, was sworn in as chief minister along with five ministers at a Raj Bhavan ceremony hours after the dramatic resignation of Manohar Lal Khattar and his cabinet, just weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

The announcement to pick Nayab Singh Saini as Haryana's next chief minister was sudden and unexpected, but had similarities of element of surprise which the BJP is known for when it had named Manohar Lal Khattar to the post in 2014.

The surprise move by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came weeks before Lok Sabha polls are to be held. Haryana assembly polls are due in October.

Haryana Assembly: JJP issues whip, asks its MLAs to remain absent during voting on confidence motion

The Jannayak Janata Party on Wednesday issued a whip, asking its 10 legislators to remain absent from the House during voting on the confidence motion to be brought by the Nayab Singh Saini government in the Haryana Assembly.

The BJP named Nayab Singh Saini as Haryana’s new chief minister on Tuesday, hours after the surprise resignation of Manohar Lal Khattar from the post along with his cabinet ministers.

Congress MLAs question 'urgency' behind convening the Assembly session

Before the CM moved the motion, Congress MLAs sought to know from Speaker Gian Chand Gupta about the urgency of convening the Assembly session.

"There was no emergency," senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda said and claimed that proper time was not given to the MLAs.

Party MLA B B Batra asked, "What was the urgency of convening the session?"

Hooda asked the Speaker to adjourn the session for at least one hour so that the legislators could reach the Assembly. To this, the Speaker said it was the duty of the members to reach the House on time.

Gupta, however, said, "Let the discussion take place and in the meantime, the members can reach the House."

Nayab Saini speaks in Haryana Assembly, says 'I have come from a humble background'

Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini addresses the Assembly session.

He says, "I come from a humble family background, no one is in politics in my family. I am just a party worker of the BJP and today I have been given such a big opportunity. I must say that this can be only possible in a party like the BJP..."

"(Former Haryana CM) Manohar Lal Khattar provided Rs 3,000 pension to the senior citizens. The pension is directly transferred to the bank accounts of the senior citizens. He has made this wonderful system," says Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini.

The Nayab Singh Saini government in Haryana on Wednesday won the confidence motion in the Assembly here through a voice vote.

A two-hour discussion took place on the motion.

The Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) had issued a whip, asking its 10 legislators to remain absent from the House during voting on the confidence motion. However, when the issue of trust vote was taken up, five of its MLAs left the House.
