In an order, Chief Justice Ranjan Gagoi and Justice A G Masih asked the state police head to ensure that DSPs — Ravinder Kumar and Rajinderpal Anand — “cease to remain in service until the appeals filed by them against their conviction are disposed of”.

The DGP has been asked to report compliance of the order on February 21. The petition was filed by noted advocate and RTI activist H C Arora. The other police officers who will be terminated are ASI Malvinder Singh, inspector Harinderpal Singh and constables Gurcharan Singh and Manjit Singh.

DSP Ravinder was convicted in a murder case on March 4, 2003. The state government dismissed him from the service after his conviction, but was reinstated a year later after the Punjab and Haryana High Court suspended his sentence and granted him bail.

The other DSP Rajinderpal was convicted for life for murder on December 16, 2007. He was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in May 2008 and was reinstated. His appeal against conviction is pending before the HC.
