Though it is impossible to survive with such a high level of blood sugar in normal conditions, for these ‘rich and influential’ inmates, it is rather a convenient excuse to spend their time in comfort in hospitals, far from the rigorous life of other ‘poor’ prisoners.
The officials could find several such ‘patients’ with either excessively high blood sugar levels or abnormal blood pressure measurements.
They also found an inmate with fasting plasma glucose level of 901 mg and the Post Prandial (PP) plasma sugar level of 948 mg against the normal levels of 70-110 mg and 110-170 mg, respectively.
What is more embarrassing is that they have been living a normal life not betraying any outward symptoms associated with high sugar or blood pressure levels. On inquiry it was found that two of such ‘patients’ included Sanjeeve Khera and Sanjay Khera, who had duped Uttar Pradesh Pradeshik Investments and Industrial Corporation (PICUP) to the tune of crores by obtaining loans against fictitious companies and were arrested a few days back after absconding for almost two decades.
The investigations also revealed that the blood and other samples of these inmates and undertrials were tampered with in connivance with the jail staff and then the doctors, who after examining the reports, which obviously show inflated levels, recommended their admission in the hospital.
They spend their time in the jail hospital with all the comforts and facilities.
Of course, these men have to shell out a substantial sum of money to the jail staff in exchange for all these.
A former minister from Uttar Pradesh, who was an undertrial in a case of murder, had allegedly spent over a year in the hospital, allegedly in connivance with the jail authorities after feigning illness.
