Top sources in the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) told Deccan Herald that the nuclear road map with Russia envisages setting up of four large nuclear reactors — each with capacity of upwards of 1,000 MW — in Kudankulam and two even bigger units in Haripur.

Two 1,000 MW Russian reactors are under construction in Kudankulam for which Russia has sent the fuel. The first one is expected to be completed by September 2010 while the deadline for the second one is March 2011.

Supply guarantee

“Ground breaking for all the six new Russian reactors are expected to commence by 2017. The present road map is for the 12th plan. Subsequently, DAE will plan for the 13th plan,” sources said.

The reactors will come with lifetime fuel supply guarantee.

The nuclear agreements were signed by DAE secretary Sree Kumar Banerjee and director-general of Rosatom Sergey Kirienko in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
