IMD warns of extreme rains from July 19 in Uttar Pradesh

With barely 77.3 mm rainfall between June 1 and July 15, Uttar Pradesh has registered a "large deficient" rainfall as of Friday but the IMD has warned that it is likely to receive extreme rainfall from July 19.

As per the data available from India Meteorological Department (IMD), Uttar Pradesh was the only state that received 77.3 mm rainfall, which is minus 65 per cent of the 220 mm expected for this duration. In IMD parlance, rainfall deficit between minus 60 to minus 99 is considered as "large deficient". - IANS.

Villages near Bhatsa river put on alert amid heavy rains in Thane

The administration in Maharashtra's Thane district has alerted people living on the banks to Bhatsa river, as the water level is rising in the dam due to heavy rainfall, an official said on Friday.

As per an official release, the water level in Bhatsa dam was at 134.08 metres at 5.30 pm, and the gates of the reservoir are likely to be opened anytime, which is likely to cause flooding in the nearby villages.

The administration has alerted the villages located on the banks of the river and Sapgaon on the Sahapur-Murbad road and near the Sapgaon bridge, the official said. - PTI.

26 deaths reported due to rains, other natural calamities in Chhattisgarh

As many as 26 people lost their lives in rain-related incidents and other natural calamities in the last over one month in Chhattisgarh, where heavy downpour battered south Bastar in the last few days causing rivers to flow above the danger mark, officials said on Friday.

At least 247 houses were partially or completely damaged in various districts as a result of rainfall during the same period, while 10 relief camps have been set up in the rain-affected districts, they said.

As many as 219 animals have died in rain-related incidents, they said.

"Of the 26 deaths reported since June 1, 13 persons were killed in lightning strikes, 11 drowned and two died due to snake bite," an official from the revenue and disaster management department said. -PTI.

Over 11,000 rain-affected people shifted to safety in Gadchiroli

Over 11,000 rain-affected people were shifted to safety in 45 villages amid incessant rainfall in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district, police said on Friday.

According to the district disaster management cell, Gadchiroli received 27.7 mm rainfall during the day and heavy to moderate showers were witnessed in parts of the district.

Around 24 routes in the district were blocked due to overflowing of nullahs and damages to the bridges, and many of the closed routes are slowly being opened for traffic, it said. - PTI.

Collective water stock in Mumbai's seven reservoirs shoots up by 60% in just 10 days

Incessant and heavy rainfall in the catchment areas has led to an impressive five-fold increase in the collective water stock of seven reservoirs that supply drinking water to Mumbai in a matter of just 10 days, an official said on Friday.

While the water stock recorded on July 5 was 14.76 per cent, it has now risen to 74.82 per cent, the official said. The metropolis receives its drinking water supply from Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar and Tulsi lakes. - PTI.

People risk lives in bid to catch fish in released dam water in Chandrapur, probe ordered

Amid heavy rains in parts of Maharashtra, a video has surfaced which shows several people standing dangerously close to the water discharged from Pakadigudam dam in Chandrapur, with some of them even entering it, in order to catch fish. After the video went viral on social media, the district authorities said a probe would be conducted into it. - PTI.

Locals stunned as 10-minute cyclone tears through Kozhikode in Kerala

A 10-minute cyclone, that occurred in the Vellayil coast, created shockwaves among the fishermen and local people in the north Kerala district here on Friday morning.

The roofs of several fishing boats and a few houses nearby were flown off in the gusty winds that formed in the Arabian Sea at around 10 am and moved towards the coast.

Though there was a respite to the torrential rains that have been witnessed in the past three days across northern Kerala, gusty winds and waterlogging continued in many parts in the eastern region.

In view of the incessant rains, educational institutions in Wayanad district and eastern parts of Malappuram district remained closed on Friday. - PTI.

Death toll in rain-related incidents crosses 100-mark in Maharashtra

Rain-related incidents have claimed the lives of 102 persons across Maharashtra so far during the ongoing monsoon season, the state disaster management authority said in a report on Friday.

These figures are between June 1 and July 14, it said. Three of the deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours - one each in Buldhana, Nashik and Nandurbar districts - and two persons were reported missing, it said.

The fatalities were caused by incidents like floods, lightning strikes, landslides, falling of trees and collapse of structures, among others. - PTI.

Rains continue to batter parts of south Gujarat, Saurashtra

Heavy rains continued to lash several parts of south Gujarat and Saurashtra region on Friday with six talukas receiving over 200 mm rainfall in 24 hours ending 6 am, officials said.

There appears to be no immediate respite in sight as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted "heavy to very heavy rainfall" at some places in south Gujarat and Saurashtra in the next 24 hours.

A release by the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) said since the monsoon is still active over Gujarat, considerable rainfall was recorded between 6 am and 10 am on Friday in Valsad and Navsari districts of south Gujarat and Gir Somnath district of Saurashtra region.

Large parts of the state have been witnessing heavy showers since the last one week. - PTI.

Flood alert issued in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore district

The Coimbatore district administration in Tamil Nadu has issued flood alerts following heavy rain. Water flow in the Bhavani, Noyyal, and Amaravathi rivers has increased due to incessant rain and heavy South West Monsoon lashing the areas.

The heavy rainfall at the catchment areas of reservoirs have increased the water flow in major reservoirs with inflow to Pillur reservoir increasing to 12000 cusecs on Thursday and the storage is 97.5 feet which are only 2.5 feet less than the maximum storage level of the reservoir or Full reservoir level (FRL). - IANS.

Planting of summer crops ramps up as monsoon revives

Ample monsoon rain in the first half of July accelerated planting of main summer-sown crops such as soybean, cotton and pulses in India, although rice planting is still lagging behind due to scant rainfall in northern states.

Farmers planted summer-sown crops on 5.92 crore hectares, as of July 15, slightly higher than 5.91 crore hectares a year ago, according to the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare. Crop sowing was down 9.3% until last week.

India has received 13% more rainfall than normal since the start of monsoon season on June 1, but some rice-growing states such as West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have received below-normal monsoons, the weather department data showed.

About 12.85 million hectares had been planted with rice, down 17% from a year-ago period, the ministry said. - Reuters.

Man dies after house collapses in Nagpur following heavy rains

A 45-year-old man was killed and his wife suffered injuries after their house collapsed in Nagpur city of Maharashtra following heavy rains, officials said on Friday. The incident occurred at Teen Mundi Chowk in New Babulkheda area around 11 pm on Thursday when the victims were asleep, a fire brigade official said. "The house, an independent structure on the ground, collapsed following heavy rains and the couple got trapped under the debris.

Body of TV scribe washed away in Telangana floods found

A journalist, who went missing after the car in which he was travelling was washed away in flood waters in Telangana's Jagtial district three days ago, was found dead.

After the search operation lasting for more than 48 hours, rescue workers on Friday traced the body of Zameeruddin, a reporter working for NTV, a Telugu news channel.

The rescue team also pulled out the badly mangled car from the stream. The body was found stuck in a tree.

Though the car was traced on Thursday, the rescue workers could not pull it out due to the strong current of flood water.

This time, the rainfall was so heavy that when we woke up, water had already entered our home,” Ali, a resident of Mohammadpur village told DH from a makeshift camp on a National Highway, about 5-kms away, where about 200 residents had taken shelter after floods rendered them homeless.
