The women in Seetamadhi town in Uttar Pradesh’s Sant Ravidas Nagar district, about 300 kilometres from here, on Tuesday tied ‘rakhees’, which were made of vegetables and pulses, on the photographs of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi.

“The ‘rakhees’ were made of vegetables and pulses to convey a message to the two leaders...the prices of these essential commodities have gone beyond the reach of the common man”, said Vineeta Singh, a house wife.

Some women also sent these ‘rakhees’ to the prime minister, Rahul and the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi by post in an attempt to ‘make them realise’, how the common people felt.

“Our objective is to convince the prime minister and Rahul Gandhi about the difficulties faced by housewives owing to the rising prices”, Vineeta said adding that though the price rise had an effect on all sections of the society, the housewives have been the worst sufferers. “They have to look after the domestic expenditure,” she pointed out.

On whether, they wanted a gift from their ‘distinguished brothers’, she promptly replied in the affirmative. “Just as a brother gives a gift to his sister and takes a pledge to protect her from all difficulties, we expect the prime minister and Rahul to do something to tame the inflation...that will be the greatest gift to us,” she added.
