Passengers of some trains, mostly headed to religious places, will be served only vegetarian food.
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) collaborated with the Sattvik Council of India, an NGO, to introduce services that fit the requirements of vegetarians.
The Vande Bharat Express, which travels from Delhi to Katra and makes its last stop at the Vaishno Devi Temple, will be the first train to be certified as 'sattvik', a statement issued by the NGO said.
Ramayan Express will also be another such sattvik-certified train. This norm is likely to be replicated in around 18 trains.
"There will also be an option for passengers to get Jain food,” said an official in railways.
The Sattvik Council of India said it will launch the 'sattvik' certification scheme along with IRCTC on November 15. It will also develop a handbook on vegetarian kitchens jointly with the IRCTC.
The IRCTC has an "understanding" with the NGO and has decided to seek "certification" for some of the trains that go to pilgrimage destinations like the Vande Bharat express, the statement said.
As per the plan, IRCTC base kitchens, executive lounges, budget hotels, food plazas, travel and tour packages and Rail Neer plants will be 'sattvik' certified, said the statement.
