Srinagar: At least three soldiers and a senior police officer were injured in an ongoing encounter with militants in Adigam area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday.

A police official said that a joint team of Army, paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force and Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a cordon-and-search-operation in Adigam village of Kulgam during the wee hours of Saturday following “credible inputs” about the presence of militants in the area.

He said as the joint team of security forces approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants opened fire, triggering an encounter and during the initial exchange of fire, three army soldiers and a senior police officer were injured.

The injured were immediately shifted to a hospital, where their condition is stated to be stable.

Earlier, in a social media post on X Kashmir Zone Police said: “Encounter has started at Adigam Devsar area of #Kulgam. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow.”

In the last few months, there has been a spike in terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, at a time when the first assembly election in a decade in the Union Territory is under way.

While polling for two phases has already ended, the last phase is scheduled on October 1. The counting of votes will be held on October 8.
