Kanimozhi questions language policy

Do schools in north India teach any south Indian language as students in southern parts of the country are forced to learn Hindi and Sanskrit?

This question was posed by DMK MP Kanimozhi in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday when she raised the issue of the Centre imposing Sanskrit as third language instead of German in Kendriya Vidyalayas.

She said the recent decision to replace German with Sanskrit is a "clear attempt" to impose a language on the country, which reveals a "shocking insensitivity" towards around 70,000 affected students.

She also contested the government stand that no exam would be conducted in Sanskrit subject this year and students could continue to learn German as an additional language.

“Many schools, which have accepted this move, are forcing students to learn Sanskrit and, in a way, taking away the right of these students to learn their mother tongue because another language is being enforced on them” she said.
